War Dialing

It's very common for people to install modems on their systems. Modems are easy to install and apparently very secure - after all, you have to know the phone number and oftentimes a username and password. How could someone (a) find the phone number, and (b) break through the security, if any, to get into the system. And, even more importantly, what on earth could a person do once he had broken into a system?

A war dialer is the first part of the answer. This is a program which dials all of the phone numbers in one or more prefixes, looking for the tale-tell sound patterns made by modems. Those that are found are noted for future hacking.

Once these modems have been found, a hacker can, at his or her leisure, attempt to break their security. Since modems often are not monitored the hacker can often take his time, brute-force trying username after username and password after password (if there is even any security at all). Eventually he may get into the computer.

Once he's in the computer, it's generally fairly trivial to get into any networks that the computer is attached to.
